The History of the South Wing Cottage

Our South Wing Cottage is built into the southern end of one of the huge barns which flank the east and west of the main house.

The north section of this barn contains the West Wing Cottage which in years gone by was the "servants quarters", in between these two cottages is a large open space now used as an indoor badminton court.

Prior to the conversion of the south end of this barn to create the cottage, the badminton court extended the full southerly length of the building and most of the area now used for the cottage was used as a stage.

The old photo here shows the stage at the end of the building.

During the Second World War, this was used extensively for dances and entertaining the soldiers, the POWs in the camp where we now offer glamping and the residents of the village.

Before Brayford Village Hall was built in 1963, this barn was used for many village hall type functions.

It was converted in the 1960s as accommodation.
