Around Little Bray

Little Bray is nestled in rolling countryside, just off the edge of Exmoor National Park and surrounded by working farmland.

There are quiet woodland and river walks* directly from the house and the village of Brayford.

  • Please note; walks in the woodlands around Little Bray are strictly by permission of Little Bray House and limited to trackways - do ask us before walking and we can tell you where is safe to walk.
The land is working forestry and farmland, we expect all our guests to adhere to safety advice.

Live Music - Intimate performances

Jamie plays guitar in well-known local funk/rock function band "Soulcraft" whilst Emma is one third of "Sorrelli Strings" as well as a well respected music teacher.

We plan to host a series of music and theatre events here at Little Bray over the summer of 2023... watch this space!

If you are interested in getting involved in such an event on any level, as a performer, or pop-up caterer etc, please contact us.

Fishing on the River Bray

Approximately 1 mile of private fishing on both banks of the River Bray is available to our guests, or day permits by arrangement.

A rod licence is required for all. Contact us

Exmoor National Park & Coast

On our doorstep is the vast expanse of Exmoor National Park. With a wild and diverse landscape, the moor offers deep valleys with meandering streams, open moorland with gorse and heather and the wild and stunning North Devon coastline.

The National Park boundary is 5 minutes away by car and within 10 minutes you can be out in the wilderness of the moor.

The beautiful rugged scenery of the Valley of the Rocks and nearby towns Lynton and Lynmouth are a favourite for visitors to Little Bray.

Travelling west along the coast from Lynmouth you find Britain's longest high street in Combe Martin, traditional Victorian seaside town Ilfracombe and the famous sandy beaches of Woolacombe, Putsborough, Croyde and Saunton Sands.

East from Lynmouth is mostly in Somerset and is the western edge of Exmoor including Dunster, Porlock and Minehead.

Little Bray is mentioned in the Doomsday book as a late medieval (701AD - 1539AD) Farmstead, "Brai" and was held by Drogo of the Bishop of Coutances.

The Manor at the time was High Bray but the large land holdings at Little Bray appear to have come with the Acland Family (one of Devon's largest landowners), who's earliest records here begin in 1580. This "small" estate was finally broken up in 1919 upon the death of Sir C T D Acland and covered just under 6000 acres.

The house and immediate farmland were used during World War II as the Devon Searchlight Headquarters and later a POW camp.
